A whoopie cookie

After I posted the article about whoopie pies, I finally got around to reading the whole article. If you read all the way to page two, you read that Magnolia has a maple whoopie pie!! So, that was put on my agenda for Friday night. Here you can see (or maybe you can't) it's not really a whoopie pie, but two cookies with maple cream in between. Which is why when we told the guy behind the register that we had a whoopie pie, he kept calling it a whoopie cookie. We were so tempted by everything else in the place, that we decided to split a slice of cake, as well. Because it started to get super crowded in there, as it always does, and the staff started to freak out, as they always do, we quickly just chose one. I wanted to try the Hummingbird cake, but since Heidi has to ask 500 questions before she can settle on something and the staff were seriously not having it, I suggested the coconut cake, she agreed and that was that. But when he went to cut us a slice, he said there wasn't enough left for a whole slice... so they gave it to us for free! Perfect!
The verdict is that the whoopie cookie was really delicious. The cookies were perfect -- soft on the inside with a little bit of crispiness on the outside. The cream was really tasty, and I love maple. But I'm not sure I'd go out of my way for this again. If I want a whoopie pie, I'm going to go for a real one. But if you are going to Magnolia anyway, it's worth a try.

30 Rock quote of the week -- 3/26 The Return of Dennis!

Jack: The only time I came close to vomiting is when I saw Ann Coulter's shoulderblades.

If I were there, I would have said that her face makes me want to vomit. But, alas, it's just a TV show.

I love that they keep finding ways to bring Dennis back. He's such a great character!

The Office quote of the week -- 3/26

Michael: I had a great time at the prom, and no one said yes to that, either.

National Social Work Month

Just a few more days to celebrate!

But April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, so there's still lots of fun to be had!

Whoopies in the news

I like to think I'm a little ahead of the dessert curve. After all, I have been eating cupcakes from Magnolia since at least 1999, which is when I moved to the city. Now whoopie pies, which I fell in love with in Maine last year, are apparently sweeping the nation, according to the New York Times.

(thanks for the article, Jill.)

Jersey in the house!

I am sure this was a dream come true for Jon Stewart, and it was a dream come true for me to watch it.

In addition to the interview, Bruce Springsteen performed his new song. I'll admit that this is not one of my favorite Springsteen songs, but I really liked this acoustic version.

Also, I saw the guy on the right on Sixth Ave last week, right outside of the Tasty D-lite! You could call it a "Sixth Avenue Freeze-out." (ba-dum-bum!) Heidi couldn't believe I wouldn't talk to him. But, you know, I've seen Jon Stewart three times and I've never talked to him, so I can't imagine I'd ever talk to anyone.

30 Rock quote of the week -- 3/19

Please tell me Jon Hamm isn't really gone from the show! Oh, to be part of his bubble world!

Jack, talking about Tracy Jordan: His video game made a fortune and he invested all of it in a company that dismantles bank signs. They're doing very well.
