Vacation week two -- The Stay-cation

My good friend, Heidi, food snob & Registered Dietitian, invited me to the Fancy Food Show held at the Jacob Javits Center. She went Sunday, Monday AND Tuesday, but I only went on Tuesday. As we entered and she gave me my badge, she warned me, (1) they give out samples but you're not allowed to take them out of the venue, (2) pace yourself, and (3) they will harrass you to try to sell you stuff. So I got my samples, didn't pace myself and let Heidi do all the talking. After about an hour or two, I was stuffed full of food samples, as was my bag which weighed about 50 pounds and my feet were killing. I was ready to leave, but we hadn't even gone to the international food sections or the cheese room. Ah, the trials of going to a food show!

Look at all this cheese, usually a big tempation for me... and just the thought of eating a bite of it made me want to barf.

This is a picture of a CHEESE CAKE!! Doesn't it look amazing?? Some people didn't want us taking pictures of their products, but I asked (actually, Heidi asked -- as usual, she did the talking), and they graciously allowed me to take a picture and informed me that this was like the cake at their wedding.

At the end of the show, the vendors didn't want to pack their stuff up to go home so there was a mad dash to get as many remaining samples as possible. At every exit, there was a box for people to drop their samples.... to go to City Harvest. We were trying to figure out how we were going to get all our food home and not give them to some homeless people that we knew would not appreciate gluten free cookies or Sunflower butter cups or Falafel chips. Turns out that we were actually allowed to bring out one bag of loot, and when I got home, it felt like Halloween.

Heidi did actually get some products that might be useful for the cancer patients with whom she works, and also let them scan her badge so that she can get more samples in the mail. But this was more than enough for me. A super fun day and way to spend my vacation!

Jersey Core

New Jersey gets a bad rap a lot of times, which does not make any sense to those of us that are actually from there. In the past year, my beloved home state has taken even more of a hit after Jersey Shore and The Real Housewives of NJ came on the air.

Well, here's a positive connection that comes out of the negative. At least from my point of view. This new class at my gym is called Jersey Core and it's all about getting great abs. I'll admit, I don't have great abs, but I'm happy to hear that maybe people might connect the two. (Even though I'd like to set the record straight that "The Situation" is not actually from NJ.)

Here's the difference between Jersey Shore and Connecticut boys.

New Orleans cupcakes

As far as I can tell, there are two cupcake places in New Orleans. The first one is called Kupcake Factory and is right in the middle of the French quarter, across the street from Nola, and clearly for the tourists. One bite in, I was pretty suspicious that these were made from a mix. However, the frosting was really good and creamy.

Above on the left is the Chocolate/mint and on the right is my usual, Vanilla/Vanilla.

Here's a marble cupcake--marble cupcake and chocolate&vanilla swirled frosting.

The other place was kind of a hike and I skipped part of the conference to get there, but it was worth it. Be Sweet Cupcakes.

From the top left, Vanilla/Vanilla, Red Velvet, Chocolate/Vanilla and Vanilla/Chocolate. I took one bite and said, "That's correct." The best one was the Vanilla cake with chocolate frosting. So good!! Taking the street car in the super hot weather was not so good.

New Orleans

This week, I attended a conference that was sponsored by the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. Kind of a weird name, right? I feel like it is saying that we are "pro" child abuse. When I wasn't in the conference, I was trying to see as much of New Orleans as possible.

I stuck my head into the St. Louis cathedral.

Had beignets at Cafe Dumont.

Went to the New Orleans Museum of Art. which was closed due to some kind of power failure, so I just wandered around the sculpture garden.

Took a river boat cruise... here's the moon over the Mighty Mississippi

Took the street car "uptown."

Yes, I did also go to Bourbon St, but did not stay long and did not take any pictures!

Quilt for baby Andrew

My BFF Esther just had a baby so it was time to get to work again. I find it hard to find cute stuff for boys, but my quilt shop put some boy charm packs together which made it a little easier. It's about the finished product anyway, and I love this pattern.

Summer re-runs

All my shows are over for the summer. What to blog about now?

One of my all-time favorite shows is now on DVD. I'm now in the middle of season three of "thirtysomething." I almost can't fall asleep until I've watched an episode... but then it's so good I want to watch the next one, and then I am caught up in the plot and want to see what happens in the next one, and before you know it's 1:00 am. And still I don't want to go to bed.

Other than that, here's how my summer is shaping up....

--three weeks off work.
--a trip to New Orleans.
--a week at the Jersey Shore.
--my sister's wedding.
--three JM concerts.
--a trip to San Diego.
--cupcakes!!
--another move at work.
--trying to survive the heat.
--trying not to get too freckly this year.
--going to the farmer's market.
--keeping my spring workout routine throughout the summer.
--running an art therapy group with my teenage clients.

I think that's just about it...

Glee quote of the week -- 6/8 Finale

Sue Sylvester's quote of the week about Will's hair: "I have to be honest, Will, I'm having a difficult time hearing anything you have to say today because your hair looks like a briar patch. I keep expecting racist animated Disney characters to pop up and start singing about living on the bayou."

Guest judge Olivia Newton-John: "Brunettes have no place in show business."

best performance of the week: the Journey medley, of course.
